George Carlin won’t be here to see who wins between Obama and McCain — or Bush himself, should another terrorist attack materialize and Bush declare martial law — but Carlin claimed the result doesn’t matter. They’re all the same, these politicians. They talk a lot and beg for money, but they’re powerless to bring about meaningful change. Carlin might have pointed to Barack Obama caving in to the Rethugs last week by agreeing not to prosecute the telecoms for spying and said, “See? What did I tell you?”

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss. Another cover-up is under way and the Democrats who voted for the revised FISA bill — all but guaranteed to lead to the dismissal of the 40 privacy lawsuits pending against the telecom snoops — are complicit. With these dismissals goes all evidence of government peeping into the lives of ordinary Americans, peeping that the Bush administration has been engaged in since before 9/11.

After years of inaction on bringing impeachment measures against a war criminal president, Congress looks set today to reward that same war criminal with a “get out of jail free” card in the form of telecom immunity. What this putrid piece of legislation does is keep American citizens who have been illegally spied on by the government from bringing charges against the providers — Verizon, Sprint, ATT, and others — who enabled the illegal intercepts. Perhaps more importantly, this legislation also precludes American citizens who believe in the rule of law from shining a light on the government communications that initiated this program of illegal wiretapping prior to 9/11. Or from discovering who our esteemed Criminal in Chief deemed it necessary to spy on. Were any political opponents targeted and intimidated, as occurred under J Edgar Hoover’s FBI? Don’t rule it out.

Let’s take him at his word: John McCain is like George Bush. Call him George III. (Not to be confused with this George III.) Unless he’s lying. Which would make him even more like our current president.
